Federal government to consult property industry on ways to reduce office costs

The federal government is to consult with the property industry on ways to reduce its annual $400 million expense on office fitouts.

With more than $2 billion on leases, fitouts and other services for 94 departments and agencies, the government is the largest office market tenant in the country. It will start consultation with the industry to improve upon the $105 million in savings it has already made over a four-year period.

“While substantial progress has already been made in reducing our property costs, we will continue to look for further opportunities to do more,” said David Coleman, Assistant Minister for Finance. “We are committed to ensuring that taxpayer dollars are spent as efficiently as possible.”

In the four years to June 2017, the federal government cut its occupied office area from 3.15 million square metres to 2.86 million as part of a push to reduce space leased and increase the density of workspaces it occupies.
