For the first time in 61 years, Town Hall witnessed a historic light rail moment along George Street. The inaugural test happened overnight around some streets in the CBD.
Starting from Randwick, the travelled routes include complex Hay Street intersection, part of George Street, Town Hall light rail stops, until finally reaching the new Light Rail Maintenance Depot at Lilyfield. The modern depot site, which was once part of the Rozelle Rail Yards, functions to keep the trams working together.
This will be the first time for the former Rozelle Rail Yard site to house up to 6 trams with the facilities needed for service and maintenance. Necessary tools used by maintenance crews and staff will also be stored in the spot.
The depot construction is already finalized. 1105m of track laid including 114m of aesthetic power supply (APS) is ready set for testing. The APS or “third rail” will soon run through the rails of the CBD and between Circular Quay and Bathurst Street.
Moreover, the Randwick Stabling Yard is set to house the fleet of 60 new trams. Maintenance works such as cleaning, sandbox servicing and vehicle inspections will be done in the depot after each day’s service. 30 trams are already on board and more are expected to arrive in the following weeks.
Testing and commissioning of the new trams are currently observed in Randwick, Moore Park, Surry Hills, and Central Station. Concerned citizens are reminded to watch their back as they move around the trams.
