Don't get too comfortable at that desk: new office designs are coming

From individual offices, cubicles, open floor plans and a 'palette of places', people just don't sit in one place. So what's the latest on workplace design and which companies are driving it forward?

The new designs aren't just about looks, it's an adaptation to our ever-changing internet and digital technology era with a diversity of spaces. These activity-based workplace designs are meant to maximise productivity.

Microsoft has been undergoing some of the most aggressive makeovers to enhance collaboration. Since 2014, it has opened 10 renovated buildings without offices.

Companies have also been experimenting with different space configurations to encourage more 'casual collisions' that foster social interactions and idea sharing.

"It's like increasing the clock speed of a computer," Ross Love, a senior partner for New York at the Boston Consulting Group said. "If you rev things up, you ought to be able to do more."
