Workplaces continue to advance in enterprise and atmosphere as designers venture into a more convenient venues that can help promote more effective and efficient outputs. The concept of “third place” is a hangout spot, community center or home away from home that provides an essential zone outside of home and work. Thus, it’s a welcoming space that cultivates essential social experiences in the company of like-minded people.
The Social Space at the INDE.Awards 2019, presented by Woven Image, has two “third place” themed projects that were shortlisted for the awards. These are 1 Martin Place, Sydney, designed by Siren Design with Adriano Pupilli Architects and Graphite Design and 2 Southbank by BVN.
1 Martin Place, Sydney
A team of artists, expert on their field, collaborated for a successful ambitious transformation of an underwhelming commercial tower entrance into a truly unique “third place” in the heart of the building. The resulting scheme reads a welcoming marketplace where people meet their neighbors, friends, and colleagues to work, relax and socialize.
On arrival, tenants and guests will be welcomed by a ground-to-mezzanine immerse digital experience. The mezzanine, including a café and different seating arrangements, is particularly inviting because of its expansive canopy structure made of ten thousands of dowels.
The contemporary space is as well perfected with a structural staircase, engineered with double-height digital artworks, that creates strong connection between the levels. Different light fittings are used to denote different settings complemented by the biophilic features that easily facilitate conducive to positive interactions among users.
