Australian brand Tongue N Groove has a new home in Sydney that shows a concept of “thinking outside the box at its best.” The showroom has been awarded a prestigious Good Design Award Gold Accolade in the Architectural Design category in recognition for outstanding design and innovation.
Designed by architecture and interior design studio Tobias Partners, the showroom is deeply experiential space whose materiality explores the diverse potential of oak. The interior space highlights the versatility of oak and marks the beginning of endless design possibilities for architects, designers and consumers.
The playful display that moves beyond the floor to the walls and ceiling portrays the space as a stage that displays the design flexibility and materiality of the timber in variety of ways. The place creatively transformed into a series of experiences that turned into contemporary interpretations and variations of the product.
Exploring the inside layout, the view presents timber panels floating down from the ceiling interpolated with LED strip lighting. A dynamic and textural installation that envelops the visitor in the material becomes the result of the display. Adding to the interest is the gradation of coloured tones featured along a wall in a diagonal pattern, creating a sense of movement, while several floor levels display the range of colours and patterns. To further enhance the sense of line, material and texture, timber batterns were set on stunning brass mirror inlays that divide the public and private rooms.
Nick Tobias, the founding partner of Tobias Partners, explained that the entire shop front opens up with no visual obstructions which is intended to encourage people to step foot into the showroom.
